Frequently Asked Breast Augmentation Questions

What are the possible risks of breast implants surgery?

This is not an uncommon question and probably a little too long for a simple blog; however, there are some commonly thought of risks that we talk about. These are bleeding, infection, changes in nipple sensation, and capsular contracture. All of these risks as well as the others are discussed very thoroughly in the consultation and the pre-op visit prior to surgery so we can make sure that every patient has all their questions answered and is truly achieved an informed consent when they embark upon surgery. This is just as true for breast implants as it is for any other surgery.

We want YOU to feel as comfortable as possible with this procedure! Call today to ask about any hesitations and then book a consult to go over those questions with Dr Rude in detail, we will do our best to make you happy and at ease!

Frequently Asked Breast Augmentation Questions

Will mammograms be less accurate in detecting breast cancer?

This is a very good question because breast cancer is not uncommon. After breast augmentation ladies need to advise their mammographer that they have implants; if they don’t, this will quickly be figured out anyways. When doing a mammography after augmentation it is necessary to do extra views called ecklund views. Early studies on this estimated the about of breast tissue concealed or hidden by the implant to be in the neighborhood of 5%. These are fairly old studies. In talking with the radiologist now they do not feel this is still the same disadvantage that it was. Breast augmentation is exceedingly common and they have gotten a lot of practice.

More importantly, do implants affect breast cancer detection? The short answer is no. There have been studies that look at breast cancer detection after implants. If breast implants were delaying a diagnosis of breast cancer we might see larger tumors or lymph node spreads or more importantly people with implants getting breast cancer later would have a lower survival. All of these things turned out not to be the case. The tumor size was not changed and the likelihood of it spreading to the lymph nodes was no different. The most important thing was that the breast cancer survival with or without implants was unchanged. We very much encourage our patients to continue breast cancer screening after breast augmentation as recommended by their age and family history.

Frequently Asked Breast Augmentation Question

Which type of breast implants are less likely to ripple or to be visible?

There are now three types of implants available. These are saline, traditional gel, and form stable implants. Rippling is more seen in saline. It is significantly more than either one of the gels. The memory stable gels are probably the less likely. The memory gel implants represent an improvement in implants but they are predominantly for a niche part of the market. They are most ideal for relatively tight skinned envelope ladies who do not want a particularly large implant. This combination is less likely to have rippling anyways but the implant itself would also have less.
