The fourth annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day will fall on October 21st this year.

In honor of this, along with Breast Cancer Awareness month, Dr. Rude will donate $50 to the Breast Cancer Reconstruction Awareness campaign and fund for every breast augmentation consultation in the month of October. This campaign is funded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

All proceeds raised by the fund will be used to fund breast reconstruction research, as well as provide financial assistance to uninsured or under-insured women seeking breast reconstruction after a lumpectomy or mastectomy.

Get To Know Our Office!

Get to know our nurse, Tara!
Here are a few basic questions and facts for you to know Tara better! We love love LOVE her at the office and enjoy the joy she brings, come in and meet her!

-What is your favorite thing about working at B.V.P.S.?
I love the amount of patient contact I get.  I am lucky enough to be able see my patients through the entire surgery process: from consult, to surgery and until cleared after their post ops.  I love being able to get to know every one of them as well as their families.  I am absolutely blessed to have this job & wouldn’t trade it for anything.

-What drew you into the nursing field?
I came to A&M to go to medical school, but a motorcycle wreck changed all of that.  While in the hospital I really got to see what nursing was all about and loved how involved the nurses were able to be with my care.  My mom being a nurse for 30 years may or may not have heavily influenced that decision; plus if you’ve ever met me, you know I am such a people person and the definition of a chatty Kathy!!

-What do you think your best at as a nurse?
Having been a patient many times, I can truly empathize with the patients, which I believe is my best quality as a nurse.  Nursing and caring for others is my passion!

-What do you like to do on the weekends?
My weekends are spent with my 3 year daughter, Emma.  She is the light of my life.  You can usually find us laying by a pool or shopping!  But we love going on road trips and spending time with my family and boyfriend.  I really can’t complain – when it comes to family and friends, I hit the jack pot!

-If you were to describe yourself in 3 words what would it be?
If I were to describe myself in 3 words I’d pick optimistic, loud, and compassionate.  I love life and it’s rare to find me without a smile on my face.

-Funniest thing that has happened while at BVPS
HMMM…Every day is an adventure at the office.  You can usually find us girls giggling away up front.  We're usually up to absolutely no good, but have the best intentions.  It’s rare to find office staff as close are ours is, but at BVPS, we're more like family!

What Dr. Rude says:
I am very fortunate to work with a lot of very nice ladies. Certainly, the success that Brazos Valley Plastic Surgery has enjoyed is in large part due to the wonderful people that I get to work with.

Tara Dusek, RN.
As Tara tells everyone, I originally met her as a patient. She then became an outstanding patient coordinator. We saw her off to nursing school. After graduating nursing school she gained great valuable clinical experience in the ER. We were fortunate enough to have her come back to us where now she is our recovery room nurse. She is also an injector. Tara makes peoples recoveries as comfortable as possible with her excellent clinical skills. She is also a fantastic nurse injector. She does my Dysport and her injecting practice is predictably growing with her infectious personality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Would you suggest having breast surgery before having kids?

This question is commonly posed. Breast augmentation, for instance, has two groups of ladies who commonly request this surgery. One is typically in their low 20’s. They want to get a breast augmentation and enjoy the result before having children. The other is ladies who are done having their children and would like to reverse some of the changes that pregnancy has caused. Generally I tell ladies if they are trying to get pregnant or pregnancy is in the very near future, to hold off on breast surgeries but if it is not in the immediate future that it is absolutely fine to have it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Zeltiq help the extra skin I have?

Answer: Generally, No.

Zeltiq reduces fat. It is generally not regarded as a skin tightening mechanism. In fact, for people with a lot of loose skin Zeltiq would potentially make it worse by removing some of the fat that they do have further loosening their skin envelope. Zeltiq is great for getting rid of fat but not effective for tightening skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you recommend to treat swelling and bruising?

There are a variety of homeopathic over the counter medications for swelling and bruising. Products such as Arnica have been used. Some patients feel like they have gotten a lot of benefit. Most do not feel that it make a significant difference. While I do not find anything wrong with these products I have not been impressed enough to endorse them. For me to want to endorse them I would have to see that it was a substantial benefit for all my patients.

Call us today to schedule if you have any more questions!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the fees regarding complications?

I carry an insurance called CosmetAssure for complications with cosmetic surgery. This is an insurance policy only offered to board certified plastics surgeon. It is a charge listed on all cosmetic surgical quotes. This covers surgical emergencies occurring around the time of surgery such as bleeding or infection requiring hospitalization. The policy is gone over in detail with the patient during the preoperative visit.

Frequently Asked Plastic Surgery Questions

Question: Do you have to have a drain with a tummy tuck?

Answer: You don’t always have to have a drain with a tummy tuck.  I am able to do a drainless tummy tuck on the right candidates. Newer techniques in plastic surgery such as progressive tension sutures have made this a safe practical option for the right patients. The best candidates do not have additional liposuction to do at the same time. This is also harder to do in the massive weight loss patients, for instance, those who have had bariatric surgery. For the people who do have drains after surgery due to the same techniques we are usually able to get these out after a matter of 2-3 days. This is a great improvement over the past averages that could have been as long two weeks.

How to Choose Your Plastic Surgeon

When most patients shop for a plastic surgeon they tend to focus a lot on comparing the before and after photos. While skill is a very important factor to consider, it shouldn’t be the only thing you look for in a plastic surgeon. To help guide you in the process, here is a checklist of questions you should seek to answer before moving forward with a surgeon:
ü  Are they a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon? Some people are surprised to learn that not all plastic surgeons are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Because being board certified is not required for a physician to perform cosmetic surgery, not all surgeons seek a board certification. However, just because it isn’t required doesn’t mean it isn’t highly recommended and preferable. Being board certified means, that particular surgeon has met certain requirements and standards regarding training, experience, and ethics. So, if a surgeon is not board certified it begs the question, “why not?” It is for this reason that the first question you should always ask when considering a surgeon is, “Are they board certified?”
ü  Are they skilled? This one, as previously stated, is very important. Looking at before and after pictures of other patients is one way to see a sample of the plastic surgeons skills, but you should try to look further. Ask around town and read reviews to make sure the surgeon has a good reputation. You are also encouraged to inquire about your surgeon’s educational history and accolades.
ü  Is the price right? Prices that are too good to be true should be a red flag. We have all heard the old adage, “You get what you pay for,” this is all too true in plastic surgery. When it comes to cheap plastic surgery you have to question what corners are being cut to drive that price down. Prices should be fair and reasonable.
ü  How do you feel about the rest of the staff? If the surgeon has already met all of the above to win your approval, you should then consider how you fell about the staff. You will spend a lot of time interacting with your surgeon’s staff, so make sure that they are friendly, accommodating, and make you feel comfortable.

We would love the opportunity to help you answer your plastic surgery questions! To schedule your consultation with Dr. Rude, or to learn more about the practice, call our office at 979-776-8825.

The Forgotten Generations Skin Care

A lot of young adult in their twenties and thirties are tasked with finding a skin care regimen that can both reduce the signs of early aging and help with that occasional adult acne that we all so naively believed would go away after high school. It seems that most drugstore and department store brands have forgotten about this in-between generation. So, you’re stuck stocking your bathroom cabinets with a ton of different products and a skin care regimen so elaborate that you rarely have time for it. Well, we have a solution to this dilemma that is simple, easy, and only available in a reputable physician’s office.
Obagi 360 is an effective and easy-to-use system created specifically for the needs of the younger generation. It includes just three essential products- a cleanser, a retinol, and a moisturizing sunscreen.

Here is a breakdown of how each of these products works to help you achieve and maintain a flawless complexion:

Cleanser: The Obagi 360 Exfoliating Cleanser is used twice a day (AM & PM) to unclog pores, gently exfoliate dead skin cells, and meticulously clean your skin. This leaves your skin smoother, brighter, and perfectly primed for the next step in your regimen.
Retinol: Obagi 360 Retinol 0.5% is applied at night after you use your 360 cleanser. This form of retinol is released gradually to refine your skins tone and texture, so you achieve a clearer-looking complexion with minimal irritation. It is also efficient for minimizing fine lines and wrinkles.
Moisturizing Sunscreen: Obagi 360 HydraFactor Broad Spectrum 30 is the second and final step of your morning routine, after you have used you have sufficiently cleansed your skin with your 360 cleanser. The 360 HydraFactor does the job of two products. It is a soothing moisturizer that also effectively protects you from damaging UV rays.
The most important thing to know about any skincare regimen is what kind of overall results you should expect when it’s all said and done. Here is a concise recap of you should expect to achieve and maintain with this regimen:
        ·  A brighter, more even skin tone and texture
        ·  Refined appearance of fine lines
        ·  Minimized appearance of pores
        ·  Moisturized skin
        ·  Relief from occasional break outs
        ·  Maintained resiliency

Extra Tips to Maximize your Results:

·         Be consistent- It’s important to keep to all the steps of your skincare regimen daily so that your skin gets everything it needs to stay beautiful.
·         Use a clean towel- Try keeping a clean hand towel, or a convenient roll of paper towels, on your bathroom counter to dry your face after cleansing- as opposed to the towel your routinely use to wipe your hands. This will keep you from wiping dirt and oils right on to your freshly cleansed skin.
·         Tailor your regimen- Add a few quality products to your regimen if you need a little extra focus on some issues. If you still get a pesky zit from time to time try our Pro-Essentials Acne Stick to directly apply a potent dose of salicylic acid to the blemish. If you want an extra boost of brightness and anti-aging protection try adding a vitamin-C serum.
·         Kick start your new regimen- Obagi Radiance peel is a salicylic acid (the active ingredient in most acne treatments) based peel that instantly exfoliates your skin. This makes it the perfect way to kick start your 360 regimen, or add a little extra radiance to your complexion before a big event.

If you are interested in starting the Obagi 360 regimen or learning more about how our wide selection of professional skincare products can meet your needs, call our office, at 979-776-8825, to schedule your consultation with Dr. Rude.

Lip Lift

Lip lift

We often get phone calls regarding lip lifts.
Lip lifts are a relatively common procedure. There are two types of lip lifts. The first is called an anguloplasty. This is to surgically correct the down-turned corners of the mouth. It has recently gotten some notoriety as a surgical cure for a “resting b*tch face”. It involves excising a roughly triangular section of tissue above the corners of the mouth. This allows the corners of the mouth to be rotated superiorly. I have also done the procedure for the same reason for people who get some excoriation of the skin from having such severely down-turned corners of the mouth that spit will drip out.

The other type of lip lift is to help evert the lip. As people age their upper lip appears to get longer. This is product of not only sagging but also losing some bony volume in their mid-face. This involves taking out a curved section of tissue right under the nose. It results in a very inconspicuous scar and helps shorten and evert the lip. It gives the appearance of being able to see more lip without doing a lip augmentation which is often not desired.

Protecting and Preserving in your Twenties?!

Your twenties can be a tricky time when it comes to skincare. You are probably past your Clearasil days, but you don’t yet need wrinkle treatments. So what should you be doing? Two words: protect and preserve.

Protecting your skin from the sun should be priority number one. The sun gives off harmful rays that mutate your dermal cellular structures, and also, destroy elastin and collagen. So, how do you protect yourself from the daily exposure? Sunblock seems like it would be the easy answer, but one way that you may not have considered is Vitamin–C.  Sunblock works by using titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to physically block or deflect the sun’s rays. Alternatively, Vitamin-C is an antioxidant that absorbs the UV rays and neutralizes the free- radicals. In addition to protecting your skin, Vitamin C can help preserve your skin by stimulating collagen synthesis and decreasing melanin (think dark spots and freckles) formation.

We produce some Vitamin-C naturally by eating our fruits and veggies; however, an additional Vitamin-C, topically applied, is needed to effectively protect and preserve our skin.  You will find many products containing Vitamin-C on the markets, including creams, make up, and serums. So, how do you choose? We have an easy solution. Of all the Vitamin-C products, only serums contain an almost colorless form of active Vitamin-C.  We carry some amazing Vitamin-C serums from the well trusted brand Obagi in various concentrations.  To get started on a skincare regimen that includes Vitamin-C serum, call our office to schedule your appointment with Dr. Rude. Mention this blog post and get 10% off your first Vitamin- C purchase!

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I going to lose sensation in my breasts if I get a lift?

Answer: Generally not.
Changes in nipple sensation have to be listed as a risk of surgery. This is not a common side effect of breast lifting. It is more common in breast reductions. It has been my experience that the larger the amount reduced or cut away the more risks there is of losing some nipple sensation. Generally for a breast lift this is not a common issue that I have encountered. I would however list it as a risk of surgery.
